Cardio
Plus - Benefits & Features
Key Ingredients
- Policosanol,
derived from sugar cane wax. It lowers LDL (bad cholesterol)
as well as many prescription "statins". It raises
HDL (good cholesterol) better than the "statins".
It is better tolerated and safer.
- Plant Sterol
Ester (Vegapure), In September 2000, the U.S. Food
and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a health claim that
permits statements that sterol esters may reduce the risk
of coronary heart disease.
- Niacin
which also lowers LDL and raises HDL.
- Folic Acid
and B vitamins reduce Homocysteine
level, another risk factor for Coronary Heart Disease.
- CoEnzyme Q10
improves cardiac function.
- Hawthorn Berry
Extract may improve angina and congestive heart failure
symptoms.

Policosanol
One
of the newest discoveries in the treatment of heart disease
risk comes from Cuba. It is a proprietary extract called policosanol,
which is derived from sugar cane wax. Policosanol contains
a variety of long-chain alcohols, including octacosanol. Policosanol
has an exceptional safety profile. Based on a survey of over
27,000 users of policosanol, weight loss is its only known
side effect. Numerous human studies have demonstrated reproducible,
favorable, and significant alterations in blood cholesterol
profiles with both nondiabetic and diabetic subjects.
Policosanol
is similar in function and potency to some statin drugs. Researchers
recently found policosanol could extend exercise tolerance
in patients with intermittent claudication, a leg lameness
brought on by exercise and a marker of vascular disease. Research
also showed that policosanol reduces cardiac risk factors
by inhibiting platelet aggregation and the development of
atherosclerosis.
A 2002 study published in the American Heart
Journal reviewed the literature on placebo-controlled lipid-lowering
studies using policosanol. It found that at doses of 10 to
20 mg per day, policosanol lowered cholesterol by 17 to 21
percent, lowering component LDL by 21 to 29 percent, and raised
HDL by 8 to 15 percent. The study concluded that policosanol
is "a very promising phytochemical alternative to classic
lipid-lowering agents such as statins. About 30 million Americans
use statin drugs.
In a study published in 2003, patients who
took a daily dose of 10 mg of policosanol experienced a 17.5
percent drop in total cholesterol, a 31 percent drop in LDL
cholesterol (bad cholesterol), and a 31.5 percent rise in
HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol). These results suggest
that policosanol is as effective as prescription drugs, without
their side effects.
In another study, after using 10 mg/day
policosanol for two years, study participants tripled their
treadmill walking distance. The placebo group experienced
insignificant change. The 10 mg per day dose required for
effectiveness is novel for a dietary supplement, and reminiscent
of statin drugs, which are usually dispensed in 10 mg or 20
mg dosages.
Other studies suggest that policosanol may
further support general cardiovascular health by helping the
body maintain proper blood flow through the circulatory system
when problems may exist. This possible benefit is related
to policosanol's affect on platelet aggregation, reducing
the ability of the platelets to clump together, thicken the
blood and if necessary forming a clot. Some people take aspirin
daily to accomplish this very effect. In fact a study has
even indicated a possible advantage for combined policosanol
and aspirin therapy. Because of this potential for supporting
the circulatory system, policosanol may also benefit patients
suffering from intermittent claudication, a disease that constricts
blood flow to the lower limbs.
Vegapure® Sterol
Esters
Sterols are a family of fat-like substances, including sitosterol,
campesterol, stigmasterol, and other naturally occurring sterols.
Vegapure® contains the same major sterols that are the
basis for the FDA health claim: sitosterol, campesterol and
stigmasterol, in quantities that exceed the minimum required
content.
Since the 1950’s, a persuasive body
of evidence supporting the cholesterol lowering effectiveness
of sterols and sterol esters has been amassed. In September
2000, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved
a health claim that permits statements that sterol esters
may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.
